Mark di Battista

Mark di Battista is trained in the hard sciences, completing post-doctoral work in Computational Geophysical Fluid Dynamics, a discipline that uses computers to investigate the complex motions of oceans and atmospheres.

The artistic work here trades mathematical equations for physical components – water-based colorants, acrylic inks, isopropyl alcohol and graphite powder – poured onto a commercial, nonabsorbent sheet of polypropylene known as yupo paper.  The fluids flow and interact on the yupo surface, fluids with different physical and chemical properties that, much like natural phenomena, are subject to the brush-forces of gravity or viscosity, and so mix, diffuse and settle into abstractions that might recall the features of the physical world, or of a moody, more interior place.
